"Invictus" is the conclusion of the trilogy opened by "Marriage I"
and it turns out as the heavier Virgin Steele album. Let me first point
out what I don't like: the vocals are too screamy, I find them
exaggerated, like "I must prove I'm mean and vicious, grrrrrr....", and
secondly, there's a really horrible song like "Mind, Body, Spirit",
whose heavy part is so banal and weak it seems to come out of Manowar's
horrendous "Louder Than Hell". As for the rest, we find what Virgin
Steele always offered, in a more aggressive and modern way (just listen
to the dynamic, almost thrashy drum parts and complex drilling riffs)
and long, dramatic epic songs full of keys and atmospheres, the true
adult epic metal - only this time much weaker. There are also very
beautiful and poetic interludes between some of the songs. The way the
deicide plot unfolds shows David knows ancient mythology, since it's
build following closely what always happened in every ancient days'
myth: the killing of a father-god from his successor, in this case the
last godly reign before the triumph of humanity. A sufficient work, but
I expect much more from Virgin Steele.
